Brian Wilson came in last night with the game on the line. Barry Zito went 7 strong innings giving up only 2 runs and left needing only 6 outs with a 3 run lead to beat his former team for the first time.
It almost didn't happen.
The Guillermo Mota, Santiago Casilla, and Jeremy Affeldt combo didn't have it getting only 1 out and giving up a hit, 4 walks and 2 runs. It could have been a lot worse but luckily the hit started the inning instead of coming with the bases full. Bruce Bochy had seen enough and went to the closer.
Brian Wilson certainly did not disappoint. He came in throwing gas with a nasty slider.
It is very nice to see the slider working well after being beat with the pitch recently. This games vintage was down right Nennian, coming in at the outside corner and then diving down outside of the strike zone.
He mixed the pitches well and painted the black with the fastball. The control that Wilson has developed is the biggest reason that he is among the best closers in the National League.
Brian Wilson slammed the door shut on what might have been the hardest save he has been asked to complete this season. This season Wilson has pitched well, it hasn't always been easy and the quick 1-2-3 innings we would like to see but that is just not the Giants way this season.
