I am not quite sure how it happened, but Cody Ross has kind of snuck up on me this season. It seems like he was in a horrible funk since coming back from injury and battling Aaron Rowand, Aubrey Huff, and Miguel Tejada for biggest disappointment of the season. Now, he's hitting like the second best non-injured Giants hitter.
I think that Ross got lost in all of the concern about the other players. He wasn't hitting all that well but he wasn't quite a black whole of offense either. I think what covered up his hot streak was the depth of his slump. Here is the timeline of his milestones this season:
May 5: His batting average gets above .200 and stays there.
May 8: His slugging cracks the .300 mark and his OPS is above .600.
May 16: His on base percentage breaks through .300.
When you look at these, it's pretty obvious that he was still not having a good season but he was slowly working his way back towards respectability. If you look at his numbers since May 1st, it paints a vastly different picture.
He is hitting .301/.402/.506 with four home runs, 12 walks, and 17 strikeouts in just under 100 plate appearances. That is good for a .381 wOBA. Not quite Jose Bautista levels, but still good enough to be the best on the team during that rough offensive month.

The climb out of offensive purgatory has been slow but lets hope that he can keep it up. A hot Cody Ross can carry a team for a month. Just ask the teams the Giants played in the playoffs.
